A few months ago, I discovered Argentine and Chilean organizations doing great things for conservation and outdoor recreation. Conservation Land Trust (AR) and Conservation Patagonica (CL) were created by Doug Tompkins, founder of The North Face and Esprit, and Kris Tompkins, past CEO of Patagonia outdoor clothing company. These philanthropists now work to create the first Patagonia National Parks. The organizations purchase ranching and other private lands to restore and donate to the Chilean and Argentine governments for permanent protection. And just as National Parks in the United States accommodate human visitors, Conservation Land Trust and Conservation Patagonica build landscape-appropriate visitors' centers and campgrounds.
Please do visit their websites to learn more about their awesome efforts and accomplishments, and to see beautiful photos of landscape and wildlife. If you can afford it, you might even volunteer for a few weeks restoring a piece of land down at the bottom of the world!
